Asaf Vivante, M.D Ph.D
Principal Investigator

Professor Asaf Vivante is a physician-scientist and a world-renowned expert in pediatric nephrology. He currently serves as Head of Pediatric Department (B) at the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital at Sheba Medical Center, where he also leads the genetic kidney diseases research laboratory and the nephrogenetic clinic.

My Story

Prof. Vivante received his medical training at the Technion Faculty of Medicine, and joined Sheba’s Pediatric Department in 2006 as a resident. His clinical excellence and academic promise were recognized early on with the Sheba Prize, and he was selected for the Sheba Talpiot Medical Leadership Program – an elite track designed to cultivate future leaders in Israeli medicine. From 2010 to 2013, while serving as an attending physician in Pediatric Department B, Prof. Vivante completed a PhD in molecular genetics at Tel Aviv University. Between 2013 and 2017, he specialized in pediatric nephrology and conducted postdoctoral research at Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard University. Upon returning to Sheba, in 2019 he was appointed Head of the Pediatrics Department.
 
Prof. Vivante went on to build a visionary platform for advancing the care of patients with kidney disease. He established a dedicated research laboratory at Sheba Medical Center, focused on uncovering the genetic causes of kidney disease in both children and adults. Alongside this, he founded Israel’s first nephro-genetic clinic—an innovative clinical setting that integrates cutting-edge genomic diagnostics with individualized patient care. Driven by a commitment to translating research into meaningful clinical impact, Prof. Vivante’s work has earned him international recognition. He is the recipient of numerous competitive research grants, including awards from the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) and the European Research Council (ERC), underscoring the global relevance and scientific excellence of his contributions.

Prof. Vivante holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor at Tel Aviv University and leads the Etrogim Program, an academic training initiative at Sheba Medical Center designed to cultivate the next generation of hospital-based physician-leaders.
 
Prof. Vivante has published extensively in high-impact medical journals, including JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), underscoring his leadership in both clinical care and academic research.
 
He is married and the proud father of four children.
